It was clash of the Titans Feluda and Bomkesh at the box office in December, last year. The big fight not only set the cash registers jingling, but reinforced Bengalis' love for all things thrilling. But getting thrilled is one thing, making a thriller quite another. With Room No. 103, director Aniket Chattopadhyay says the Bengali screen will witness an original thriller after long.
Both Bomkesh and Feluda are detective stories, not thrillers. To me, Alfred Hitchcock's films are classic thrillers. The Bengali audience is still in love with thrillers like Jighansha, Lalkuthi and Kuheli.
Room No. 103 is a throwback to that era," says Aniket. The film comprises four stories connected to a hotel room and has Soumitra Chatterjee playing the sutradhar lobby manager Rudra Chatterjee. The first story revolves around Dyotona Mukherjee (Anjana Basu) and Indradul Haque (Badsha Moitra). Their relationship climaxes in the fateful hotel room. The second one is about contract killer Tirtha Majumdar (Rajesh Sharma), who does theatre workshop in daytime under Rudraprasad Sengupta. The third story is about Rupam (Anindya Bose), a singer from the suburbs, who dumps Madhabilata (Ankita). The latter finds support in a foul-mouthed production manager, played by Kanchana Moitra. The final story revolves around a Casanova director, Kaushik Roy (Jisshu U Sengupta) and a struggling actress, Trina (Priyanka). The director says he based Jisshu's reel character on none other than Mahesh Bhatt. During the shooting of the first story, there were flies around a reel dead body . There are certain things beyond human understanding. That's also the theme of my film," says Aniket.Tell him if the film is an acid test for him as he is mostly known for his comedies and the director shoots back, All that the audience wants today is good content."
Producer Kaustuv Roy adds that there's indeed a thin line between detective films and thrillers. After long, a thriller is being made and I'm hoping that the audience will love it," he says.
