Mike Tomlin's cryptic comments on Aaron Rodgers fuel rumors of a Steelers move—Is Pittsburgh desperate for a QB?

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be closer to adding one of the NFL's most accomplished quarterbacks to their roster. Head coach Mike Tomlin recently dropped intriguing hints about the possibility of Aaron Rodgers joining the Steelers, following productive talks between the veteran QB and the team.

On April 26, 2025, during an appearance on NFL Network, Tomlin revealed that he had engaged in "really productive talks" with the four-time MVP, who became a free agent after parting ways with the New York Jets. While Tomlin left the door open for a potential move, he remained cautious and refused to predict when or if Rodgers would ultimately join the Steelers. He said, "That's certainly a possibility... I'm not going to forecast the ifs and whens regarding not only him, but any other potential free agent."

Rodgers, 41, is coming off a mixed season with the Jets. While the team finished with a disappointing 5-12 record, Rodgers still managed to throw for 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, which has kept his value high despite the Jets' struggles. With his release becoming official in June 2025, Rodgers has become a sought-after commodity among teams looking for a proven leader under center.

The Steelers, who ranked 25th in QBR last season, have been searching for a more experienced quarterback to guide the offense in 2025. While the team has invested in rookie quarterback Will Howard from Ohio State, the addition of a veteran like Rodgers could provide an immediate upgrade. Tomlin, who spoke highly of Rodgers, hinted that the Steelers could be an ideal fit, noting that he had enjoyed getting to know the 10-time Pro Bowler during their talks.

However, Tomlin also acknowledged the stiff competition for Rodgers' services. In addition to Pittsburgh, the New York Giants have reportedly made a more lucrative offer to the veteran QB.
