India vs Australia Highlights, 2nd Test, Day 1, Border Gavaskar Trophy: Labuschagne, McSweeney take Australia to 86/1 at stumps

Mitchell Starc produced a career-best six-wicket haul with a swinging pink ball to help Australia dominate India on the opening day of the day-night Test in Adelaide.

Electing to bat, India started well at 69/1 but then collapsed to 180 all out by the dinner break, with Nitish Reddy's fearless 42 off 54 the only standout contribution.

Australia finished the day strong, reaching 86 for 1 at stumps.

Marnus Labuschagne (20* off 67) and Nathan McSweeney (38* off 97) capitalized on India's missed opportunities, with McSweeney dropped early by Rishabh Pant.

Jasprit Bumrah, on his birthday, claimed the sole wicket, dismissing Usman Khawaja with a stunning delivery.

India’s pacers will now need to step up on day two to restrict Australia, who will benefit from more favorable daytime batting conditions.

Starc was the star of the second session, claiming five wickets with precision inswingers.

He dismantled India's middle and lower order, removing R Ashwin and Harshit Rana, while Pat Cummins effectively utilized the short ball to trouble the batters.

India's middle order faltered, with Rohit Sharma (3) falling to Boland, and Pant (21) succumbing to Cummins' sharp bouncer.

Reddy’s counterattacking 42, featuring three sixes, pushed India past 150 but couldn’t prevent the collapse.

Earlier, Starc’s strikes pegged India back despite a solid 69-run opening stand between KL Rahul (37) and Shubman Gill (31).

Rahul’s survival on a no-ball was short-lived as Starc removed him and Virat Kohli (7) in quick succession.

Gill, returning from injury, showed promise but fell to Boland, triggering India’s slide.

Starc’s brilliance ensured Australia held all the aces heading into day two.

That's it! Jasprit Bumrah completes the final over of the day as Australia get to 86 for one in reply to India's first inning score of 180 all out on Day 1 of this second day-night Test in Adelaide.

Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney batted superbly in the final session against this quality Indian pace attack and under the night sky as their 62-run unbeaten stand has given the hosts the upper hand in this Test.

Although Australia still trail by 94 runs, they will be the happier unit at the close of play on Day 1.

After folding for 180, India needed quick wickets but the determined Australian batters kept India at bay.

Jasprit Bumrah did manage a wicket in form of Usman Khawaja but that was the only success India had in the final session.

Well, due to floodlight failure earlier in the session, an extra three minutes were added and Jasprit Bumrah will now bowl the final over of the day.

Jasprit Bumrah completes a probing 10th over, giving away just a single in it that too off a no ball.

31 overs into the innings and we now finally see Ravichandran Ashwin with the ball in hand.

As we get closer to the end of day's play, can the veteran get a wicket that team has been desperately searching for?

Can India get a much-needed breakthrough or will Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney walks back to the pavilion unbeaten?

Australia still 101 runs behind India but both Labuschagne and McSweeney have looked solid in their 53-run partnership.

India burn a review while trying to get rid of Nathan McSweeney.

Harshit Rana bowls a quick 143 clicks delivery at good length and it nipped back in, hitting McSweeney's front pad.

It was a confident appeal from Harshit but the on-field umpire ruled against India.

Rohit sent the decision upstairs and ball-tracking shows that the delivery is doing too much and missing leg stump.

It was a length ball outside off from Harshit and McSweeney punched it to cover-point. A horrible mis-field from Shubman Gill as the ball through between his legs and races to the fence.

FOUR! FOUR! Nathan McSweeney now growing in confidence. He cracks back-to-back boundaries to end the Nitish Reddy third over. A nice cover drive off a half-volley and McSweeney then follows it up with cracking pull shot to the deep mid-wicket fence. McSweeney moves to 27 at the end of the 24th over.

FOUR! Nathan McSweeney gets his second boundary of the evening. A nicely placed and timed shot from the Aussie opener to third-man fence.

Siraj bowls a good length delivery outside off and McSweeney rocks back and punches it past gully and backward point fielders.

McSweeney looked in total control of the shot!

With that boundary from McSweeney, 50 also came up for Australia in the 21st over.

Searching for wickets, skipper Rohit Sharma brings in Nitish Reddy into the attack in place of Harshit Rana and he starts off with a maiden against Marnus Labuschagne.

Both the Aussie batters looking really watchful, leaving everything outside the line off off.

The final phase of Day 1 is underway after drinks! Harshit Rana bowls a solid maiden after the break as India pacers continue to probe Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney outside the line of off stump.

[on if he visualised getting swing first-ball to Jaiswal] Not that much to be honest. Nothing really changes game by game, was a nice start. [on the weather conditions] Certainly did not help the engine, got a bit cramped at the end. It [the pink ball] goes through weird patches, won't do much and then does go, day 1 you expect with a little bit of grass to do a bit, maybe with the forecast we have it dries out a bit later on but apart from the first hour when we were a bit wide we were good."

Full and straight, Nitish flicks it to fine leg for four more. Two balls later, Nitish's confidence comes into display once again. Short, Nitish pulls it away. There's Nathan Lyon on the boundary who tries to clutch on to it with a leap but there was a bit too much on it

After the flashy stuff, R Ashwin with a gorgeous stroke and Pat Cummins can only look on in slight admiration perhaps. Touch too full from Marsh, Ashwin whips it away off the pads and the ball goes running away to the mid-wicket boundary. That was some shot!

Clearly R Ashwin's approach is to go into the attack rather than corner himself into defensive strokes. Angled in full from Cummins, Ashwin gets his bottom hand into play and cracks it over Starc, stationed at mid-on, to collect four more

First ball after the Drinks break and R Ashwin survives! Looks to play a drive off Mitchell Marsh but ends up getting a thick outside edge which flies to the slip region. McSweeney throws himself at it but his dive to the left is futile. To make it worse, the ball runs to the boundary rope

Pat Cummins with yet another spicy bouncer. Nasty stuff this! Nitish Kumar Reddy would be pleased to know it didn't get much air. The ball flies over the slip cordon and the wicketkeeper and runs off to the boundary rope

Moments after being struck on the back by an errant throw, without damage, Rishabh Pant is bounced out! Vicious bounce on that delivery by Pat Cummins, Pant desperately tries to get his bat out of the way but ends up getting the shoulder of it and the ball pops up for a straightforward catch which is rounded off by Marnus Labuschagne.

It is another inswinger from Starc, Nitish offers no shot to it, the ball nips in to hit him on the pads close to the off-stump. Ball-tracking shows it was going over the off-stump!

LBW! Rohit Sharma is dismissed for 3! He has a long chat with Rishabh Pant and they decide against using the DRS. The angling delivery by Boland nips back, Rohit is stuck in his crease and is unable to get around the inward movement, gets beaten on the inside edge.
