India vs Australia Highlights, 2nd Test Day 1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Australia reached 86 for 1 in their first innings after dismissing India for 180 at the end of the opening day of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide on Friday.

Nathan McSweeney and Marnus Labuschagne were at the crease on 38 and 20 respectively when the stumps were drawn after 33 overs of play in Australia's first innings.

The home side trail by another 94 runs.

Opener Usman Khawaja was the lone Australia batter out for 13 off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah.

Earlier, India were all out for 180 at dinner after playing 44.12 overs as the visitors lost four and six wickets in the first and second sessions of the day respectively after opting to bat.

Nitish Reddy top-scored for India with 42 off 54 balls, while KL Rahul and Shubman Gill contributed 37 and 31 respectively.

Yashasvi Jaiswal (0), Virat Kohli (7) and captain Rohit Sharma (3) fell cheaply while Rishabh Pant and Ravichandran Ashwin contributed 21 and 22 respectively.

Pacer Mitchell Starc was the wrecker-in-chief for Australia as he took six Indian wickets for 48 runs.

India made three changes with captain Rohit, Gill and Ashwin returning to the playing XI after missing the first Test which India won by 295 runs. Devdutt Padikkal, Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar made way for them.

Brief Scores:

India: 180 all out in 44.1 overs (Nitish Reddy 42, KL Rahul 37, Shubman Gill 31; Mitchell Starc 6/48).

Australia: 86 for 1 in 33 overs (Nathan McSweeney 38 not out, Marnus Labuschagne 20 not out; Jasprit Bumrah 1/13).

India vs Australia, 2nd Test Day 1 in a nutshell

Mitchell Starc produced a career-best six-wicket haul with a swinging pink ball to help Australia dominate India on the opening day of the day-night Test in Adelaide.

Electing to bat, India started well at 69/1 but then collapsed to 180 all out by the dinner break, with Nitish Reddy's fearless 42 off 54 the only standout contribution.

Australia finished the day strong, reaching 86 for 1 at stumps.

Marnus Labuschagne (20* off 67) and Nathan McSweeney (38* off 97) capitalized on India's missed opportunities, with McSweeney dropped early by Rishabh Pant.

Jasprit Bumrah, on his birthday, claimed the sole wicket, dismissing Usman Khawaja with a stunning delivery.

India’s pacers will now need to step up on day two to restrict Australia, who will benefit from more favorable daytime batting conditions.

Starc was the star of the second session, claiming five wickets with precision inswingers.

He dismantled India's middle and lower order, removing R Ashwin and Harshit Rana, while Pat Cummins effectively utilized the short ball to trouble the batters.

India's middle order faltered, with Rohit Sharma (3) falling to Boland, and Pant (21) succumbing to Cummins' sharp bouncer.

Reddy’s counterattacking 42, featuring three sixes, pushed India past 150 but couldn’t prevent the collapse.

Earlier, Starc’s strikes pegged India back despite a solid 69-run opening stand between KL Rahul (37) and Shubman Gill (31).

Rahul’s survival on a no-ball was short-lived as Starc removed him and Virat Kohli (7) in quick succession.

Gill, returning from injury, showed promise but fell to Boland, triggering India’s slide.

Starc’s brilliance ensured Australia held all the aces heading into day two.

2nd Test, Day 1 | STUMPS | Australia 86 for one, trail India by another 94 runs

That's it! Jasprit Bumrah completes the final over of the day as Australia get to 86 for one in reply to India's first inning score of 180 all out on Day 1 of this second day-night Test in Adelaide.

Marnus Labuschagne and Nathan McSweeney batted superbly in the final session against this quality Indian pace attack and under the night sky as their 62-run unbeaten stand has given the hosts the upper hand in this Test.

Although Australia still trail by 94 runs, they will be the happier unit at the close of play on Day 1.

After folding for 180, India needed quick wickets but the determined Australian batters kept India at bay.

Jasprit Bumrah did manage a wicket in form of Usman Khawaja but that was the only success India had in the final session.

[on if he visualised getting swing first-ball to Jaiswal] Not that much to be honest. Nothing really changes game by game, was a nice start. [on the weather conditions] Certainly did not help the engine, got a bit cramped at the end. It [the pink ball] goes through weird patches, won't do much and then does go, day 1 you expect with a little bit of grass to do a bit, maybe with the forecast we have it dries out a bit later on but apart from the first hour when we were a bit wide we were good."

India vs Australia, 2nd Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Australia lost opener Usman Khawaja but took first day honours at the day-night second Test in Adelaide Friday after a Mitchell Starc onslaught saw India crumble to 180 all out.

At the close, the hosts were 86-1 with Nathan McSweeney not out 38 from 97 balls and Marnus Labuschagne on 20 after the visitors were dismissed on the cusp of tea after winning the toss and opting to bat.

A menacing Starc was India's chief destroyer.

He gave the hosts a dream start in removing Yashasvi Jaiswal with the first ball of the match and ended with 6-48 -- his best Test figures.

In reply, Australia weathered 10 overs of the pink ball at dusk before Jasprit Bumrah's persistence paid off, finding extra movement and with it a thick edge from Khawaja (13) that carried to Rohit Sharma at slip.

McSweeney took 17 balls to get off the mark and had a life on three when dropped by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

But he made the most of his fortune, showing maturity in his second Test, while Labuschagne survived a nervy start as he targets a big score after a lean spell.

"It's been my role for a while to attack the stumps and try and make early inroads," said Starc. "Good way to start a Test. A good day all up.

"To finish the day just one down... to fight through that sustained pressure from a quality bowling attack is fantastic."

India came into the clash riding high after a 295-run victory at the first Test in Perth, but Australia have a formidable record in Adelaide, winning all seven pink-ball Tests they have played at the venue.

The visitors retained Jaiswal and KL Rahul as openers in preference to Rohit, who missed the first Test on paternity leave and came in at six.

But the plan backfired as Starc sensationally trapped Jaiswal lbw from a swinging first ball, with the left-armer's pumped-up celebration showing how much it meant.

Jaiswal scored 161 in his last innings.

The returning Shubman Gill then stroked two boundaries in an eventful first over.

But the runs dried up and Rahul was at the crease for 40 minutes without scoring when he was given out, caught behind off Scott Boland.

Rahul was walking off, but a no-ball was called and he survived.

Five balls later and he had another let-off, dropped by Khawaja.

Undeterred, he battled on before Starc wove his magic again to remove him for 37.

Virat Kohli roared back to form in Perth with an unbeaten century but he was no match for Starc this time, out for seven when Steve Smith collected a slip catch.

Gill weathered the storm, but his luck ran out just before the first break when he fell lbw on 31 to the relentless Boland.

- 'Still in the game' -

"I thought Australia did well, they set us up nicely with some of the dismissals, but also I don't think 86-1 is a true reflection of how we bowled," said India bowling coach Morne Morkel.

"I know the score looks like a big gap between the two teams, but we still feel we're in the game."

Six wickets tumbled in the second session, including Rohit (3) and Pant (21).

Pant should have gone for five, but McSweeney spilled a sharp chance in the gully off Boland, in the side for the injured Josh Hazlewood.

But the 35-year-old got his reward four balls later, beating Rohit's bat to trap him lbw.

Pant fell to a vicious climbing ball from Pat Cummins before a hostile Starc returned and took care of Ravichandran Ashwin (22) and Harshit Rana (0) in the space of four balls.

With India in trouble, Nitish Kumar Reddy took charge, clobbering two big sixes in one Boland over for his highest Test score of 42 before he and Bumrah fell to Starc and Cummins respectively.
