The New York Mets surprised fans with a strong start to the 2025 season after providing an unexpected playoff push in the previous season. But just as the momentum was gathering, a series of injuries had started to unsettle the team. Its top players are on the injured list, and the Mets may need outside help to return to form. A possible deal for Chicago White Sox center fielder Luis Robert Jr.might be coming soon.

Jesse Winker AJ Minter and several others joined a growing list of injured Mets

The Mets lost even before the season began when they suffered two serious setbacks. Two of the opening-day starting pitchers, Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, were out because of injuries. That was just the beginning.
Two relievers, AJ Minter and Danny Young, are now also season casualties. Recently, designated hitter Jesse Winker has been placed on the injured list. He was followed by Jose Siri, who was also hurt. These are losses that diminish the Mets' choices, especially in the outfield. The club now requires a boost. The Mets, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, are interested in obtaining strong, speedy White Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. through a trade.

Mets might acquire Luis Robert Jr. to gain depth at outfield

Luis Robert Jr. is a high-upside talent. He broke out in 2023 as an All-Star. While he hasn't reached that level this season, he is still a threatening player. So far this year in 2025, he's hitting a dismal.186, but he leads the American League with 15 stolen bases and has been improving late at the plate.Luis Robert Jr.'s deal has him as a highly sought-after option for the Mets. He signed a six-year, $50 million deal in 2020 and is earning $15 million this year. They have options in 2026 and 2027 as well, which keeps options open if they do bring him aboard. He plays center field, a position where the Mets are presently short. To acquire Luis Robert Jr., the White Sox are said to be interested in Blade Tidwell, a 23-year-old pitcher rated as the Mets' 15th-best prospect. Tidwell owns a 4.45 ERA and 42 strikeouts in seven Triple-A starts this year. Also Read: MLB Reporter David Adler Picks Luis Robert Jr. As Dark Horse To Dominate AL Central
