Alijah Arenas out from coma: Family shares rescuer’s account and USC commit’s first words - "Did anyone get hurt?"

Alijah Arenas, the 18-year-old son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas and a USC commit, has finally woken up from a coma. His family has shared fresh updates about his health and how he inquired if anyone else was also hurt in the accident soon after he came out of the coma. Arenas’ Tesla Cybertruck had crashed into a tree and caught fire early Friday. He was pulled out of the car by bystanders and taken to the hospital.
As Alijah Arenas came out of the coma, ESPN journalist Shams Charania shared the statement from the Arenas family on X. It read: “In a remarkable and hopeful development, Alijah Arenas has come out of his coma and has shown significant signs of progress within the last 24 hours. In a powerful and emotional moment, Alijah opened his eyes and was able to write on a piece of paper that he remembered the smoke and asked, 'Did anyone get hurt?'"
Talking about his health and the effect of prayers on him, the family revealed, “Although he remains intubated, this progress marks a critical step forward in his recovery. His mother, Laura Govan, father, Gilbert Arenas, siblings, and family have been by his side every step of the way, holding onto faith and drawing strength from the prayers and love pouring in from around the world.”

The family also shared an account of the incident as shared by the person who rescued Arenas Jr. from the Cybertruck. The man shared: "I remember hearing banging on the car window, but I couldn't see anything because the smoke was so thick. That's when I realized someone was inside. I tried to break the window, but it wouldn't give. Then I saw one of the windows was cracked just enough, and we used everything we had to bend it and pull him out. The car was on fire. We just knew we had to get him out."
The Arenas family called the rescuer’s act of courage and Alijah's incredible will to survive “nothing short of miraculous.” They have asked the public for their prayers and support as their miracle baby fights his way back to a full recovery. They have also expressed gratitude for the medical team caring for Arenas and for the overwhelming love and encouragement from the community.

Alijah is the second child of three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas. Upon hearing about the accident, USC's men's basketball coach, Eric Musselman, shared his thoughts and prayers for Alijah and his family on X.
