Newcastle manager Eddie Howe gives heartfelt thanks to the medical team after a pneumonia health scare
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has paid an emotional tribute to the medics who rushed him back to health following his recent pneumonia fight. In April 2025, Howe was hospitalised, meaning the player missed a few important matches, including a crucial match against Ipswich and other Premier League matches. Howe has made a full recovery following immediate life-saving care and is now back in charge of the Magpies.

Eddie Howe’s emotional return to the hospital to thank the staff

Eddie Howe’s trip to the hospital was an emotional one, with the manager joined by former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given. He also personally thanked the doctors, nurses, and staff who saved his life. During his visit, Howe caught up with his main advisor (and friend) Charlotte, where they had a tearful heart-to-heart. Burnley fan Charlotte was rewarded by Howe – a fellow Claret fan – with a gift of a Burnley shirt, and was also allowed to go to a St James’ Park match.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully explain how much I appreciate everything they’ve ever done for me. They were professional but also very caring, and that was the attention to detail that enabled me to return to the pitch so quickly,” Howe said.

Eddie Howe's return to football and Newcastle’s improving fortunes

Howe made a speedy return to the dugout after he was discharged from the hospital. His return game was against Ipswich Town, which ended 3–0 to Newcastle. And it was a vital win for the Magpies in the pursuit of Champions League qualification in the Premiership next season. And not only has Howe’s historic fight been good for his health, but for his team’s momentum, too. The return of the manager has given the squad new life, and his presence on and off the field has been priceless.

Yes, it made Howe think about the value of health and the wisdom of getting medical help quickly. “I’ve learned a lot during this time, not just about my health but also about how resilient and supportive the people around me are,” he said. His reinvigorated dedication to the club and the appreciation toward those who supported him have only furthered the emotional connection he has with both the team and the city of Newcastle.
