NAVI MUMBAI: A builder from Navi Mumbai, Gurunath Chichkar (50), allegedly died by suicide after shooting himself in the head with a pistol at his office on Friday morning.
The deceased resided on the fourth floor of a society in Killed Gaothan near Belapur Fort, while his office is located on the ground floor of the same society.
Chichkar reportedly left a suicide note addressed to his mother, stating that he was taking the drastic step as he could no longer bear the mental stress caused by repeated summons for inquiry by the Mumbai NCB and Belapur police, as his two absconding sons are allegedly involved in the drugs trade.
ACP (Crime) Ajay Landge confirmed that the pistol used by Gurunath Chichkar was unlicensed.
DCP (Zone-1) Pankaj Dahane informed that on Friday around 6.30 am, Chichkar told his wife he was going to his office on the ground floor of the society. When he did not return for a long time, his wife went to check and found him lying in a pool of blood. She alerted her brother, who in turn informed the NRI Coastal Police. Chichkar was declared brought dead on arrival at the hospital.
DCP Dahane said, "The kin of Chichkar have claimed that he was under severe mental stress for the past one month as he was been summoned for inquiry by Mumbai NCB after his two sons Naveen and Dhiraj were found to be involved in drugs trade. Mumbai NCB had busted a drugs cartel last month wherein his elder Naveen Chichkar, who is based in London, was alleged to be the kingpin of drugs trade. As per the Mumbai NCB, the cartel reportedly sold drugs to Australia with cocaine and hybrid strain hydroponic weed worth crores of rupees and were delivered across the country and brought to Mumbai via air cargo from the United States. Also, Chichkar's younger son Dhiraj was also involved in the drugs trade as he was found to be involved in the drugs seizure by Navi Mumbai Anti-narcotics cell team recently."
